Gerald William "Gerry" Harris (born October 8, 1935 in Claverley ; † July 28, 2020 ) was an English football player . As a left defender , he won two English championships in a row with the Wolverhampton Wanderers in the seasons 1957/58 and 1958/59 and the FA Cup in 1960 .

Athletic career

Harris grew up with his three brothers on a farm near Bridgnorth and as a footballer he first worked as a left winger for the amateur club Bobbington . After a less successful trial training at West Bromwich Albion , he joined the Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1953 . There he proved himself within a short time and in January 1954 he signed his first professional contract with the "Wolves". In the early years Harris' place was limited to the substitute teams and only at the beginning of the 1956/57 season, head coach Stan Cullis invited him to the first team. Shortly before, Cullis had commissioned his players Billy Wright and Bill Shorthouse to review a game of the third team and Harris was noticed as a top performer. Harris, now retrained as a left defender, made his debut on August 29, 1956 in a 5: 4 goal against Luton Town . When Shorthouse injured himself five weeks later, Harris took over his regular place on the left defensive side. He was then a constant in the team that won two English championships in series in the seasons 1957/58 and 1958/59 and the FA Cup the following year .

In 1962 he was demoted to the reserve team and stayed there until the beginning of the 1964/65 season when he made his comeback on the professional team after the departure of George Showell . At the end of this season he had to accept the first relegation with the club since 1923 and a year later he left the club in the direction of third division club FC Walsall . Another twelve months later he ended his active career due to injury. In the following years Harris, who was a passionate bowl player , returned to his homeland Claverley.
