Jang Woo-jin (also Jang Woojin ; born September 10, 1995 in Incheon ) is a South Korean table tennis player . With the team he won bronze at the World Championships in both 2016 and 2018 . He is right-handed and uses the European shakehand style .

Career

In 2013 the South Korean appeared internationally for the first time, at the youth world championships he was crowned world champion at the age of 18.

Further appearances followed in 2014, including at the Japan Open, where he took part in the U-21 competition and won silver after losing to Hugo Calderano in the final . In addition, he was allowed to start at the World Tour Grand Finals in the U-21 competition, but failed after a 1-4 final defeat to Asuka Machi .

In 2015 he also played with the adults, including the Korea Open, where he met fellow countryman Jung Young-sik in the semifinals . Here he lost 1-4, but could at least win bronze.

At the Japan Open he had to admit defeat in the qualification, but this time he won gold at the China Open, again in the U-21 competition. Due to strong performances, he was also able to take part in the World Tour Grand Finals, but lost in the round of 16 against the Chinese Xu Xin .

The year 2016 was quite successful for the South Korean, at the Belarus Open he secured gold after a 4-3 win against the Russian Grigory Vlasov . He also won bronze with the team at the World Cup . At the Korea Open he had to admit defeat in the third round against the later runner-up Ma Long .

In 2017 he failed both at the Asian Championships and at the Swedish Open in the third round. At the World Cup in Düsseldorf he was able to reach the round of 16, his best placement so far.

Here he met Timo Boll and lost 1-4. In 2018 he beat the top 10 player Jun Mizutani at the Korea Open and was able to move into the final. In the end he won silver. At the Polish Open he had to admit defeat to his teammate Lim Jonghoon . With the team, he finished third in the 2018 World Cup . After reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in 2019 , in which he narrowly defeated his teammate An Jaehyun 3: 4 and missed a medal, he became the best-placed South Korean player for the first time.
