action

In 1843 the young Karl Marx, then still a journalist for the Rheinische Zeitung in Cologne, was driven into exile by political pressure and went to Paris with his wife Jenny . There the acquaintance with Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Friedrich Engels deepened . Engels had recently published his study of the miserable living conditions of the English working class. His turning away from the bourgeoisie , from which he himself comes, is initially described separately, and his first encounter with his future Irish partner is also shown. After initial difficulties, Marx and Engels become friends and begin their work together. After another exile - this time from France, from where Marx fled to Belgium - Marx Engels followed to England. Through self-doubt and temptation, the two succeeded in gaining the trust of the representatives of the League of the Righteous and writing a party program for them: the Communist Party's manifesto . At the decisive meeting they get the renaming to the League of Communists and the adoption of the new program. Finally, the revolutions of 1848/1849 appear on the horizon .

criticism

The German film critics received the film mixed. Sascha Westphal criticized on epd-film that Peck flees "into a kind of update of socialist realism ".

Spiegel Online remarked: "The radical thing in his life were his thoughts and writings, and to make this accessible on film, a completely different narrative approach would be needed than the clumsy condensation in supposed key scenes." The Spiegel print edition stated that the film had " the charm of an illustrated Wikipedia entry ”.

Jenni Zylka found positive words in the taz : “(...) despite the directorial decision to keep the film formally conventional-historical, perhaps not to mess with any of the possible target groups, there is a lot of passion to be felt: The Haitian director Peck (...) would like to understand not only with the head, but also with the heart. "

The US film magazine Variety was not very enthusiastic about the Berlinale in its report and stated that the film was so old-fashioned that it tamed the radicalism of its subject.

By July 20, 2017, 176,604 people in Germany had seen the film in cinemas.
