Alain Gomis (born March 6, 1972 in Paris ) is a French-Senegalese film director . His feature film L'Afrance was awarded the Silver Leopard in Locarno in 2002. In 2012 and 2017 he was represented in the competition at the Berlinale with the films Aujourd'hui and Félicité . With Félicité , he won the Etalon d'or of the pan-African film and television festival FESPACO for the second time in 2017 .

Life

Gomis first studied art history and film at the Sorbonne in Paris . After various video and short films, he received the Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2002 for his feature film debut L'Afrance . The film is dedicated to the emotional needs of migrants in France. In 2008 his film Andalucia was shown at the Venice Days film festival.

With his film Aujourd'hui Gomis was represented for the first time in 2012 in the competition of the Berlinale. The film was also submitted as a Senegalese entry for an Oscar for best foreign language film . In 2017 Gomis was again in the Berlinale competition with his film Félicité , which won him the Grand Jury Prize and in 2018 made it into the preselection for the Senegalese submission for the Oscar for best foreign-language film.
