Aujourd'hui is a 2012 Senegalese - French film directed by Alain Gomis , who also wrote the script . The film tells of the last day in the life of Satché, who returned to his homeland, Senegal, for this purpose. Aujourd'hui ran in the competition at the 62nd Berlinale and had its world premiere there on February 10, 2012.

action

Satché has returned from the United States to his native Senegal for the last day of his life. When he woke up in his room that day, he perceived the room and the objects in it as if he were seeing them for the first time. When he leaves the room, his large family is already waiting for him. His mother hugs him and cries. He sits idly at a table while the others list his good and bad qualities. Then Satché separates from his family and walks through the streets of Dakar and sees half-finished buildings, plastic garbage and, overall, gets a little glorified impression of his city. He is accompanied by people who celebrate, dance, laugh, play music and give him gifts for the journey into the realm of the dead. Then this impression on him diminishes and he realizes more and more the negative sides of the city that he had pushed out of his memory. In the face of this he is silent and yet moves like someone who belongs there. In the evening he returns home, lies down and closes his eyes.

background

Aujourd'hui was filmed in a suburb of Dakar. It was produced by Eric Idriss-Kanago , Gilles Sandoz and Oumar Sall , so some of its funding comes from Africa. Alain Guesnier and Agora Films from Paris appeared as co-producers . The main actor Saul Williams is an American singer and actor. Aujourd'hui celebrated its world premiere on February 10, 2012 at the 62nd Berlinale , where it was also shown in the competition.

Reviews

Verene Lueken saw the film for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and rated it positively. She saw it as “the first surprise in the Berlinale competition” and came to the conclusion: “ Aujourd'hui in its seemingly simple form (the last 24 hours) is a complex story that does without flashbacks and yet tells of the past (and in view of the ruins, also from later). It is, it must also be said, a film that juries love. Berlinale juries especially. ” Dominik Kamalzadeh also rated the film positively for the Standard . He praised the camera work of Christelle Fournier and Gomi's production. Kamalzadeh also rated the film as well as the opening film Farewell, My Queen! as an indication that the competition of 2012 would be played more courageously. Andreas Borcholte was critical of Spiegel Online . He wrote: "Unfortunately, however, the film with its fatalistic theme never grips you by the throat, on the contrary, Satché's phlegm is transmitted to the viewer in a bad way [...]."
