Bai lu yuan (German festival title: White Deer Plain ) is a Chinese historical film from 2012, directed by Wang Quan'an . It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chen Zhongshi . The film tells the story of two families from a village in the first half of the 20th century who came into conflict as a result of the social upheavals. Bai lu yuan ran in the competition at the 62nd Berlinale and had its world premiere on February 15, 2012.

action

The film opens with a view of a wheat field. The fall of the Qing Dynasty and the declaration of the Republic of China in 1912 are known in a small town . In the course of these changes, the film follows three men and their sons in coping with the situation. The clan leader Bai Jiaxuan is deeply rooted in the old system and has difficulties adapting to the changed situation. He dominates his son Xiaowen, who therefore develops feelings of inferiority and suffers from impotence. In contrast to Bai Jiaxuan, Lu Zilin, who has been the city's mayor for a long time, is following his opportunism in favor of the new rulers. His son Lu Zhaopen later becomes a leader of the peasant movement. Lu San, on the other hand, is a fanatical supporter of the empire, while his son Heiwa does not take a clear position. Heiwa meets the beautiful Tian Xiao'e, the youngest wife of the large landowner, for whom he works in the grain harvest, and the two fall in love. They flee to Heiwa's home village, but get into trouble there because they have committed adultery. Bai Jiaxuan refuses to marry the two of them. Lu San even disowned his son. Heiwa and Xiao'e therefore have to live in a shabby hut on a remote mountain. Heiwa feels that he has been treated so unfairly that he joins the rebellious farmers around Lu Zhaopen and rises among them. In doing so, however, he becomes increasingly brutal. In the turmoil of the early republic, Heiwa is arrested and goes to prison. Mayor Lu Zilin instrumentalizes Xiao'e in his power struggle with Bai Jiaxuan by causing her to approach his son Xiaowen. This is then cast out by his father and goes into town with Xiao'e. In the village the old, stubborn men stay behind with their intrigues. At the end of the film, the Japanese invaded. The film then ends as it began: with a view of a wheat field.

The film adapted the historical novel of the same name by Chen Zhongshi , which was indexed for a long time because of its explicit sex scenes. Bai lu yuan had its world premiere on February 15, 2012 in the competition at the 62nd Berlinale . After the winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2007 , Tuya's wedding , and Tuan Yuan at the Berlinale 2010 , Bai lu yuan was Wang Quan'an's third competition entry .

criticism

The reviews for Bai lu yuan have been mixed. Andreas Kilb gave the film an extremely negative review for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . He asked polemically: “Was Wang Quan'an's film“ Bai Lu Yuan ”(White Deer Plain) really over after three hours, or did the screen just go black from exhaustion?” The film started well, but “then got tangled up Wang directs the many events and résumés that she wants to keep an eye on at the same time, and in the end the Japanese have to come to restore the clarity that the film has lost through their work of destruction. "Kerstin Decker rated the film for the Tagesspiegel completely opposite. She concluded that not a minute of the film was too much. She continued euphorically: “When was the last time we would have seen a similarly compelling, clairvoyant fusion of love and historical films, of sex and history cinema? The violence of history reflects that of gender and vice versa. ” Daniel Kothenschulte judged the film rather critically for the Berliner Zeitung . Although he praised the leading actress Zhang Yuqi , he felt strongly reminiscent of Terrence Malick's In the Embers of the South in the first third of the film . Kothenschulte summed up: "... he [the film] does n't really contrast Zhang Yimou's blood-soaked agricultural landscapes of the pioneering Berlinale winner from 1988," Red Cornfield ", with his own visual language."
