Zhao Jiping

Zhao Jiping ( Chinese  趙季平  /  赵季平 , Pinyin Zhào Jìpíng ; born August 1945 in Pingliang , Gansu Province , Republic of China ) is a Chinese composer . His family is originally from Shulu (now Xinji ) in Hebei Province . He became known through his collaboration with the directors of the so-called fifth generation of Chinese cinema , above all Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige . Zhao has written the music for some of the pair's best-known films, including Red Cornfield , Red Lantern , Farewell, My Concubine, and Yellow Earth .

Zhao grew up in Xi'an , where he also studied composition at the Music Academy. He graduated in 1970. Since then he has been working as a composer. His breakthrough came when Chen invited him in 1983 to write the music for the film Yellow Earth . In addition to film scores, Zhao has also composed orchestral works and operas.
