action

Becker, a taciturn, somewhat coarse man and a convicted double murderer , works as a security guard for a security company and leads a modest life. He was recently released early from prison on a life sentence . His ex-wife broke off contact with him, and he has not seen his now grown daughter since then. Becker was a member of a militant rocker gang , but he no longer has any contact with them. His old life is as far behind him as the horrific deed he committed back then. Now all he wants is his rest, his new life. In the company he works for, he even met a woman, the cleaning lady Rita, whom he tentatively approaches. She doesn't ask him questions about his past, but doesn't want anything to do with it either. But then, at the beginning of Advent , Becker runs into Dahlmann, the man whose life he destroyed eighteen years ago. Becker had broken into the mansion of the wealthy Dahlmanns during a robbery. When Dahlmann's wife Dana surprised him, Becker shot her and her little daughter Lili, who would have had her birthday shortly before Christmas . Becker was caught, he bitterly regretted what he did and served his sentence for it. But that did not help the bereaved, whose life was completely destroyed by Becker's act. Of course, Becker now feels threatened by his victim at the time, as Dahlmann is pushing himself more and more aggressively into his life. He understands his hatred for him. But doesn't he deserve the chance to start over after all this time? Becker seeks a conversation with Dahlmann. In doing so, however, he realizes how convulsively his victim clings to him, his only bridge to his former life. Dahlmann knows exactly about Becker, about his old family, about his pretty daughter Maya, he knows about his job and also about Rita and her little son Timo. Becker asks Dahlmann for forgiveness, asks him what he can do to leave him alone. For a moment, the two sit opposite each other in a stalemate situation, Dahlmann suddenly doesn't know exactly what he actually wants from Becker. But then a thoughtless remark from Becker causes Dahlmann's anger to flare up again with full force and Becker no longer reaches him. In his excessive demands Becker makes the difficult decision to contact the rocker gang again, against all probation conditions and behind Rita’s back. He wants her to rob the warehouse he is guarding during his watch shift. Not for yourself, in order to possibly flee with the money and build a new life with Rita and Timo, but as a token of his repentance for Dahlmann, who is financially ruined. The coup succeeds and Becker gets a large share of the booty, but his nice colleague Barat is shot in the attack. He suspects Becker to have something to do with the crime. Becker sends the booty to Dahlmann. However, he understands the gesture as another humiliation. When Rita is attacked and almost raped , Becker realizes that Dahlmann is ultimately seeking retribution and that he has to stop him in order to protect the people he loves. The violence that he wanted to permanently banish from his life is now catching up with him again. Finally, there is a bloody argument between Becker and Dahlmann near an inn on New Year's Eve. Becker succeeds in killing Dahlmann. Becker, who is seriously injured himself, drives away on his old chopper from rocker times.

criticism

“One of the most moving films of this Berlinale, […] director Lars Hennings film circles the massive figure of Becker, whom the exceptional actor Peter Kurth ('Herbert') plays with dark, closed power. The night watchman, who was in jail for a long time, tries to lead a new, completely normal life. But then Dahlmann (urgently: Karl Markovics) comes back into his life, the man whose family this Becker destroyed many years ago in a terrible act of violence. The irreconcilable confrontation between the two men in this great film, which is captivating in its silence, has a tragic magnitude, something inescapably fateful, which raises the question of eternal guilt and appropriate atonement without forcing a simple answer.
