Philippe Van Leeuw

Philippe Van Leeuw (* 1954 in Brussels ) is a Belgian cameraman and film director .

Life

Van Leeuw studied at the Brussels Film School Institut Supérior des Arts and then took up a degree in cinematography at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles . He was there in the apprenticeship of Sven Nykvist and Conrad Hall . Back in Europe, he devoted himself to work on various documentaries and was active in advertising. Van Leeuw made his feature film debut as a cameraman in 1997 with the film Das Leben Jesu (La vie de Jésus) by Bruno Dumont . From then on, Van Leeuw was involved in numerous television films and short films.

In 2009 he made his directorial debut with Rwanda - The Day God Walked Away ( Le jour où Dieu est parti en voyage ). After further work as a cameraman, u. a. Asfouri  (2012) and Stable Unstable  (2013), each invited to the Dubai International Film Festival, Van Leeuw realized Innen Leben (Insyriated) in 2016 . The film was shown at the Berlinale 2017 in the “Panorama” section, where it received the audience award for the best feature film and the “ Europa Cinemas ” label .
