On the Beach at Night Alone ( Korean 밤 의 해변 에서 혼자 , Bam-ui Haebyeon-eoseo Honja ) is a 2017 film by the South Korean director Hong Sang-soo. It premiered at the 2017 Berlinale . The film is scheduled to open in South Korean cinemas in March 2017.

The film is about an affair between a successful actress and a married man. Real reports of the affair between leading actress Kim Min-hee and married director Hong Sang-soo have been a hot topic in the South Korean media since June 2016. Kim presented himself to the public for the first time since June last year at the Berlinale 2017.

Successful actress Younghee is taking time out after an affair with a married man. She travels to Hamburg . In conversations with a friend, she wonders whether her lover will follow her and whether he misses her as much as she misses him. After a while she returns to Gangneung .

The film received positive reviews. For Fabian Wallmeier, On the Beach at Night Alone combines almost all the typical elements and motifs from Hong Sang-soo . The film is consistent and Kim Min-hee fulfills her role “breathtakingly well”. Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel also gave the film a positive review. The "bitter pain in the conversations" is to be felt.

Kim Min-hee won the Best Actor Award of the 67th Berlinale .
