Alexandra Borbély (born September 4, 1986 in Nitra , Czechoslovakia ) is a Hungarian actress.

Life

Alexandra Borbély was born on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia ) and grew up in Veľký Cetín , where she also attended elementary school. Since childhood she grew up bilingual ( Slovak and Hungarian ). Although there were no artists in her family, she and her mother regularly attended the theater in Győr, Hungary . She was introduced to Czech, Slovak and American films through her mother. In elementary school, Borbély performed well in reading competitions . She then made the decision to become an actress and attended the Selye János high school in the Hungarian city of Komárom . There she became a member of the school's own theater group, Gimisz .

While still at grammar school, Borbély prepared for entrance exams to drama schools in Bratislava and Budapest , but was not accepted. Through the agency of the then director Tamás Jordán , she spent a year for training purposes at the studio of the Budapest National Theater , where she received acting lessons from well-known artists such as Jordán, Piroska Molnár , Miklós Benedek and Péter Valló . Thereupon Borbély was accepted at the Academy of Arts in Budapest, led by Gábor Máté , where she trained as an actress.

While she was still studying to be an actor in Budapest, Borbély began working at the József Katona Theater there, to which she remained loyal even after completing her training. As one of her most important theater works there, she described the lead role in Ahol a farkas is jó (2014), directed by Péter Gothár , whom she appreciates for his visuality. In the play, Borbély slipped into the role of Piroska Jancsó Ladányi (1934–1954), a Hungarian serial killer. In 2017 she took on the leading role of Rosalind in a production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It .

At the József-Katona-Theater, Borbély first came into contact with the medium of film. From 2009 she was represented with small and supporting roles on Hungarian television and in short films. Borbély also made small appearances in Hungarian cinema productions such as the gay comedy Coming out (2013), the musical film Swing (2014) and the crime comedy Az éjszakám a nappalod (2015). For the first time, she took on a larger role in the Hungarian crime series Hacktion , in which she appeared as a forensic expert Alexa for five episodes between 2013 and 2014 and got to know the film industry. Borbély's international breakthrough as a film actress paved the way for her first leading role in the cinema in the melodrama Body and Soul (2017). Directed by Ildikó Enyedi , she was seen as an introverted, autistic -looking quality inspector in a slaughterhouse trying to establish a relationship with an older boss (played by Géza Morcsányi ). In the year of its release, Body and Soul won the Golden Bear at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and was submitted as a Hungarian candidate for an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . Borbély herself received the European Film Award 2017 for her portrayal of Mária .
