Trần Anh Hùng (born December 23, 1962 in Đà Nẵng , Vietnam ) is a French film director and screenwriter of Vietnamese origin.

biography

After the communist seizure of power in Sàigón in 1975, he and his family emigrated to France. From 1985 to 1987 he attended the École Louis-Lumière film school in Paris. After he had made two short films with La Femme mariée de Nam Xuong in 1989 and La Pierre de l'attente in 1991 , his first feature film came out in 1993 with The Scent of Green Papaya . The film begins in Sàigòn in 1951 and depicts over ten years of the life of an initially poor girl who is employed in the household of a pianist, marries him and experiences a social advancement. The scent of green papaya became a success for the director; at the Cannes International Film Festival he was awarded the Golden Camera for best debut film and in 1994 a César for “ best first work ”. In addition, the film was nominated for the Oscar for " best foreign language film ".

While The Scent of Green Papaya was still exclusively created in a French studio, he went to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Sàigòn) to shoot his next film Cyclo . The focus of this work is a man who, when his rickshaw and thus his livelihood is stolen, joins a criminal organization. At the 1995 Venice International Film Festival , this film was awarded the Golden Lion , the festival's most important prize, and the FIPRESCI Prize .

The third feature film under his direction was released in 2000 with A Summer in Hanoi , in which three sisters and their love life are in the foreground. This film was shown in the international competition at the Cannes International Film Festival.

In 2009 the thriller I Come with the Rain was released. While the director's previous films were all shot in Vietnamese and are set in Vietnam, this is his first English-language film. However, like all of Trn's previous films, the film was financed with French funds. A year later he filmed the novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami with Naoko's smile (international title: Norwegian Wood ) with Ken'ichi Matsuyama , Rinko Kikuchi and Kiko Mizuhara in the leading roles. This earned him a renewed invitation to the competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2010 .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Trần is married to Trần Nữ Yên Khê , who starred in The Scent of Green Papaya and also had acting roles in his other films.
