Angela Ricci Lucchi (* 1942 in Lugo ; † February 28, 2018 in Milan ) was an Italian documentary and experimental filmmaker.

Life

Ricci Lucchi studied painting in Austria as a student of Oskar Kokoschka in the late 1960s . At the beginning of the new decade she devoted herself to documentary film in Milan , for which she developed an experimental form of smell (instead of sound) film. Together with her work and life partner, Yervant Gianikian (* 1942 in Merano) , of Armenian descent) With her works she has developed into one of the audiences and critics recognized greatness in contemporary experimental film. In her numerous films, original recordings, often obtained with great effort, are again photographed frame by frame, often formatted, recolored and re-assembled as required according to the director's aesthetic and sensitive ideas. This is how incomparable pieces such as Vom Pol zum Equator or Inventario balcanico were created .

Ricci Lucchi's films have often been nominated for prizes; Winners of such prizes are Oh! Uomo (Special Jury Prize 2004 in Yerevan ) and Pays barbare (IBAFF Murcia Prize 2013).

In 2000, retrospectives of her works took place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Cinémathèque française in Paris and at the Cineteca in Milan.

Lucchi died in Milan on February 28, 2018 at the age of 76.
