Mario Martone (born November 20, 1959 in Naples ) is an Italian film and theater director and screenwriter .

Life

Martone founded the theater group "Nobili di Rosa" at the age of 18, which in 1979 became "Falso Movimento", with which he performed numerous plays. From 1980 he experimented with videos, four years later he made his short film debut Nella città barocca . His first feature film Morte di un matematico napoletano about Renato Caccioppoli was a success that he was to confirm as one of the most remarkable directors of his generation. His next film - L'amore molesto - ran at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival and was awarded a David di Donatello . In 1998 Teatro di guerra was also shown in Cannes.

Again and again Martone occupied himself between his feature films with documentary projects and theatrical productions and he published books. From 1999 to 2001 he directed the Teatro Argentina in Rome.

In 2004 he filmed the novel L'odore di sangue by Goffredo Parise and six years later the film Die Fahne der Freiheit , which was awarded two Davids and a silver ribbon . Martone's films have received a total of 18 awards so far.

In 2014 Aureliano was staged under his direction at the Rossini Opera Festival in Palmira , and in 2015 the festival for the rediscovery of opera received the International Opera Award .
