Jennifer Kent (* in Brisbane , Queensland ) is an Australian film director , screenwriter and former actress .

Life

Career as an actress

Kent, born and raised in Brisbane , began training at the National Institute of Dramatic Art which she graduated in 1991. As an actress, she played Dee Suzeraine in 31 episodes from 1997 to 2000 in the Australian crime series On Mord . She also had roles in the Australian series All Saints , Police Rescue and Above the Law . In 1998 she played a supporting role in the Australian-American film Piggy Babe in the Big City . Kent has taught at the Australian Film Television and Radio School since 2002 .

Career as a director

After Kent, influenced by Lars von Trier's work, wanted to turn to directing, she asked him to assist him. Trier agreed and so she was able to participate in Dogville in 2002 . In 2006 she directed an episode of the Australian television series Two Twisted and released the short film Monster in 2005 . Her first feature film followed in 2014, The Babadook , which received positive reviews worldwide. For this Kent received numerous awards, including two AACTA Awards for best director and best screenplay. In 2018 she was the only female director to participate in the Venice International Film Festival with her second film, the historical revenge thriller The Nightingale - Cry for Vengeance .
