action

The single mother and former children's book author Amelia Vanek works as a geriatric nurse. She has still not gotten over her husband's death six years ago. On the day of their son Samuel's birth, he died in a traffic accident while trying to take Amelia to the hospital. This trauma tears them back and forth; on the one hand she loves her son, on the other hand she makes him responsible for the death of his father. She can therefore only endure physical closeness to a certain extent. Samuel is considered an eccentric and worries her because he always says what he thinks. She also worries about his excruciating nightmares about a monster trying to kill him and his mother.

Also because of his frightening dreams, Samuel builds weapons. When he once such resumes to school, it comes to scandal and Amelia takes him from school. At home they will find a book they do not know with an old horror story called "Mister Babadook". This announces that the Babadook would come to visit and then you can not get rid of him. Little by little, weird things happen: noises can be heard and both mother and son are plagued by visions and fears. Samuel keeps emphasizing that it is the babadook, but that he will protect his mother. She believes more and more in her son's mental illness, especially when Samuel breaks his cousin's nose in an argument on the children's birthday party to which her sister has invited, after she raised him with the death of his father. On the way home in the car, Samuel has an epileptic fit. Amelia, tired of her nerves, confides in a doctor and is prescribed sleeping pills.

However, these do not lead to any relief, but strengthen your visions. Slowly she believes her son and wants to get rid of the book, but does not succeed. Little by little the babadook takes possession of her. In her fantasy, she sees herself reunited with her dead husband when she kills Samuel. She tries to fight against her ambivalent feelings, but she no longer succeeds. Samuel takes up the fight with his mother. He knows that Babadook has taken possession of her and that she is no longer in control of her senses. He succeeds in getting through to her real self . Together they manage to remove Babadook from the mother's body and banish him in the basement of the house, where they hold him prisoner. Samuel and Amelia have found each other anew through their experiences and can also close the trauma to the death of their husband and father.

reception

The international criticism was mostly positive. The film already received a lot of praise at its premiere at the Sundance Festival . William Friedkin ( The Exorcist ) tweeted that he "has never seen a creepier movie than ' The Babadook '". Daniel Kothenschulte came to the conclusion in the Frankfurter Rundschau that this thriller “got under your skin” was “solely due to the sensitivity with which the filmmaker immersed himself in the fragile mother-child relationship. What interests her, the horror that she shares with us, is not the black man, no matter how stylish and spooky he is in his picture book portrayal. It is the collapse of the most intimate of all shelters - childlike security ”.

The film also received attention at award ceremonies, with a total of 52 nominations for an award and 40 awards. The awards include the AACTA Award (A: "Best Film", "Best Director" and "Best Screenplay"; N: "Best Lead Actress" and "Best Editing"), the Saturn Award (N: "Best Horror Film . " " , " Best Lead Actress " and " Best Young Actor " ) and the Critics' Choice Movie Award (N:" Best Horror Film "and " Best Young Actor " ).
