Vittorio Cottafavi (born January 30, 1914 in Modena , † December 14, 1998 in Rome ) was an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Cottafavi graduated in law , literature and philosophy and then attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia , where he graduated in 1938. From the following year he worked on scripts and worked as an assistant director. In 1943 he made his directorial debut with I nostri sogni ; Due to the war, it lasted until 1946, so that - in collaboration with Michael Waszynski - further work followed. In 1949 he achieved success with two biographical films close to realism ( La fiamme che non si spegne about Salvo D'Acquisto and Una donna ha ucciso ).

From 1958 Cottafavi devoted himself to the commercial antique film , in which he created remarkable, excellent craftsmanship. He shot his last film for the big screen in 1964 and then devoted himself entirely to television, for which he had occasionally worked since 1957. For this he created several outstanding and well-equipped films ( Umiliati e affesi , Vita di Dante , Cristoforo Colombo ) as well as one of the first excursions into the field of science fiction (1972 with the series A come Andromeda ). A later success was Maria Zef, based on the novel by Paolo Drigo , which was staged with amateur actors . His last film Il diavolo sulle colline was shown at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival .
