action
Androkles, King of Thebes, Hercules, his son Illo and the faithful Timoteus leave after Greece is threatened by an uncanny power. The galley that transports the warriors capsizes and King Androkles is led into the "chamber of oblivion". Hercules ends up on an island where he can defeat a monster and save Ismene. Ismene is the daughter of Antinea, Queen of Atlantis, to whom they arrive. In the palace they find Androkles. Hercules survives several assassinations by the queen and finds a magical stone in a cave on which sunlight falls through the work of Hercules, releasing forces that destroy Atlantis.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an "expensively produced monumental epic, the expense of which was disproportionate to the content" . The staging is a "heroic saga in the superficial comic style."
"A disrespectful script, comic strip episodes, harmless violence and the artificially splendid costumes and sets come together to create an entertaining example of that fine instinct that Cottafavi (...) seems to have for this type of cinema."
"The initial brawl of the Hercules cronies is so enchantingly staged and recorded with such a nimble camera that I prefer it without hesitation to the stiff pathos in Eisenstein's much-vaunted battle on Lake Peipus ."
