Álvaro Brechner (born April 9, 1976 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan - German film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Álvaro Brechner's paternal grandparents came to Uruguay from Poland in 1938. His maternal grandmother came from Germany. His cousin is the film producer Denny Brechner . He has lived in Madrid since 1999 .

Brechner has made several short and documentary films as well as three feature films to date (as of 2019). His debut Mal día para pescar was shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Semaine de la critique and has also received numerous prizes at international festivals. Mal día para pescar was also submitted as Uruguay's candidate for best foreign language film for the 2010 Academy Awards . With Señor Kaplan , he was nominated for the Goya in the category Best Foreign Film in Spanish in 2014 . In December 2014 Señor Kaplan received the ACCU Critic's Prize from the Asociación de Críticos de Cine del Uruguay (ACCU) in several categories: the main prize for best national film, for best director (Brechner), best screenplay (Brechner), and best Actress ( Nidia Telles ), best camera (Álvaro Gutiérrez), best sound (Fabián Oliver and Nacho Royo) and best artistic performance (Gustavo Ramírez) in a Uruguayan film. Brecher received the longest applause at a preview at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2018 with his latest film La noche de 12 años , which is based on real facts, such as the 12 years of solitary confinement of José Mujica , who was elected Uruguayan President in 2010 .
