Oliver Hermanus

Oliver Hermanus (born May 26, 1983 in Cape Town ) is a South African film director and screenwriter .

Life

Oliver Hermanus was born in Cape Town in 1983. He started making amateur films as a teenager before completing his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Cape Town. After graduating, he worked as a press photographer for a national news agency. After receiving a scholarship to the London Film School in 2006, he completed his studies there with a Master of Arts and returned to South Africa to work. His graduation film Shirley Adams, about a woman living in poverty who has to care for her disabled son, premiered at the 2009 Locarno Film Festival . In the same year the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and the London Film Festival , among others .

His film drama Beauty (original title Skoonheid ) about a sawmill owner who suppressed his homosexuality for years was presented by the gay Hermanus at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival . The film was submitted by South Africa at the 2012 Academy Awards as the country's contribution for best foreign language film .

His film Endless River premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2015 , where the film was nominated for the Golden Lion. The film was then presented at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film drama Moffie , which he also presented in Venice in 2019 and which was nominated for the Venice Horizons Award for best film, is Hermanus' fourth and so far last film.

For many critics, Hermanus is considered one of the most important contemporary filmmakers.
