Philipp von Hilgers

Philipp Freiherr von Hilgers (born May 9, 1785 in Hülchrath , † February 10, 1852 in Neuwied ) was a Prussian politician and district administrator in various circles.

Life

At that time Hilgers manor in Unkel-Heister

Hilgers was a son of the mayor of Cologne, Franz Jakob Joseph Freiherr von Hilgers. After studying camera and finance, he worked in a Cologne bank. In 1805 he joined Napoleon's Imperial Guard and took part in the Battle of Friedland in 1807 . In 1810 he left the French army and took over his father's estate in the municipality of Heister (now part of Unkel ). In 1814 he was appointed land captain of the Landsturm and the militia by the Duke of Nassau .

Former district office in Neuwied

After the Rhineland was taken over by the Kingdom of Prussia (1815), Hilgers was entrusted by the Prussian government in Koblenz in 1816 as district commissioner with the administration of the Linz district . On February 11, 1817 he was appointed royal district administrator. The official seat was in Erpel . From August 1820, Hilgers also took over the administration of the Ahrweiler district on the left bank of the Rhine . On May 1, 1822, the Linz district was dissolved, the associated mayorships and communities were transferred to the Neuwied district , and Hilgers was transferred to Neuwied at the same time . The district office was in Heddesdorf .

Due to the marital area within the now expanded Neuwied district, the administration of nine of the thirteen mayor's offices was subordinate to the noble authorities of the Princely Wied government in all civil matters. The royal Prussian district administrator Hilgers was only responsible for sovereignty, military and tax matters. The princely government was dissolved on October 31, 1848 and the administrative business was now completely transferred to Hilgers.

In 1827 Hilgers was awarded the title “Prussian Baron”. On July 1, 1851, Hilgers retired for health reasons and was then promoted to the " secret councilor ". He died on February 10, 1852.
