The Xiang Jiang (湘江) or Xiang River , also known as Xiang Shui (湘水), is the largest river in the Chinese province of Hunan and the largest tributary of Lake Dongting Hu , which is also traversed by the water of large southern branches of the Yangtze River .
It is 856 kilometers long and its catchment area is 96,400 square kilometers. The largest cities along its course are Changsha , the provincial capital of Hunan, as well as Xiangtan , Zhuzhou and Hengyang .
