The Yangling District (杨陵 区; Pinyin : Yánglíng Qū ) is a district of the prefecture -level city of Xianyang in Shaanxi Province in the People's Republic of China . It has an area of ​​135 square kilometers and has 202,000 inhabitants (2011). It is located about 80 km west of the provincial capital Xi'an .

history

Yangling is considered the cradle of Chinese agriculture. It is here that the first agricultural officer, the legendary agricultural god Houji from Chinese mythology , was born 4,000 years ago and taught the farmers of the area the methods of agriculture.

Yangling got its name as the tomb of the family of Emperor Yang Jian (楊堅), who founded the Sui dynasty . The so-called Tailing Mausoleum has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1996 . Yangling is not to be confused with the tomb Han Yang Ling (汉阳陵) of Han emperor Jingdi , which is also located in the administrative area of ​​Xianyang.

Since 1979, Yangling has been assigned to different administrative areas until it finally became a municipality of Xianyang in 1983. In 1997, an agricultural high-tech industrial demonstration zone was started in Yangling with the aim of promoting agricultural science and technology. Regardless of the territorial affiliation to the city of Xianyang, Yangling was placed directly under the provincial government.

The economic focus is on agriculture, plant and animal breeding, forestry, agricultural engineering, food processing as well as biomedicine and pharmacy. In connection with the agricultural high-tech industrial demonstration zone, further industrial parks are being built. The largest annual agricultural fair in China has established itself in Yangling. It took place in November 2009 for the 16th time.

education

In Yangling is the main campus of the North-West University of Agriculture and Forestry Wugong / Yang Ling (NWAFU), which in 1934 by Yang Hucheng (楊虎城), General of the North-West Army, in the reign of the Kuomintang was founded .
