former Suiyuan Province

Suiyuan ( Chinese  綏遠  /  绥远 , Pinyin Suīyuǎn , abbrev. , suī ) was the name of a former province north of the Great Wall in northern China at the time of the Empire or the nationalist republic . The provincial capital was Guisui , today's Hohhot .

The province was claimed by the "autonomous" Japanese satellite state Mengjiang ( Inner Mongolia ) from 1937 to 1945 , but only the eastern part with Guisui (Hohhot) was actually ruled by the Japanese and their allied Mongols. From 1947, Suiyuan and the former Chahar Province formed the core area of the newly established Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region within the People's Republic of China .

Until its dissolution in 1954, the province comprised the present-day Sino-Mongolian districts of Hohhot , Baotou , Ordos , Wuhai and Bayan Nur , other parts fell to the Ulanqab district .
