Fuzhou ( Chinese 撫州 市 / 抚州 市 , Pinyin Fǔzhōu Shì ) is a district-free city in Jiangxi Province , People's Republic of China . The city is also known by its former name, Linchuan .
Fuzhou is located south of the provincial capital Nanchang . The area of the city is 18,817 square kilometers and the population is 4.0 million (2010 census). The population density is 212 inhabitants per square kilometer. 482,940 people live in the actual urban settlement area of Fuzhou (2010 census).
The former Linchuan is historically important as it was the hometown of famous people. This includes above all
- Wang Anshi , a reformist statesman of the Song Dynasty ,
- Zeng Gong , an influential scientist and historian of the Song Dynasty, and
- Tang Xianzu , a famous Ming Dynasty playwright .
Important branches of industry in the region are the food, textile and automotive industries.
