Baicheng ( Chinese  白城 , Pinyin bái chéng  - "White City") is a Chinese prefecture-level city in the northeastern province of Jilin .

geography

Baicheng is on the border with Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region . The administrative area of ​​the city has an area of ​​25,683 km² and approx. 2.01 million inhabitants (end of 2004).

Administrative structure

At the county level, Baicheng consists of a city district, two counties and two independent cities. These are:

  • Taobei district (洮北区), 2,525 km², 490,000 inhabitants, city center and seat of the city government;
  • Zhenlai district (镇赉县), 4,695 km², 310,000 inhabitants, main town: Zhenlai municipality (镇赉 镇);

history

Baicheng was named a county seat in 1904 , but was still called Jing'an. In 1914 the city was first renamed Tao'an, and then in 1950 again renamed Baicheng, which means something like "White City" in Chinese. The name Baicheng comes from the original Mongolian name of the city Qaganhôt, which also means "White City". Baicheng was part of Heilongjiang Province until 1954 when the provincial borders were reorganized and the city was assigned to Jilin Province.

economy

Today Baicheng is a center of the textile industry, but leather and pottery goods are also produced here. Baicheng's agriculture mainly produces soybeans and oil crops.

traffic

Baicheng lies at the intersection of three main railway lines in the People's Republic. The railway connects Baicheng with Qiqihar and other major cities in northeast China.

Culture

Archaeological excavations in Baicheng have found very old finds dating back to around 2000 BC. Could be dated.
