Laiwu ( Chinese  莱芜 市 , Pinyin Láiwú Shì ) was a district-free city in the center of east China 's Shandong Province . It administered a territory of 2246 square kilometers and had about 1.25 million inhabitants at the end of 2007. The 2000 population census showed a total population of 1,233,525 people in 397,755 households, of which 626,549 men and 606,976 women. The same population census found that 235,086 people under the age of 14, 899,398 people between the ages of 15 and 64, and 99,041 people over 65 were living in Laiwu. The population consisted of Han Chinese with small minorities of Hui , Manchurians , Zhuang , Mongols and Koreans .

Geography and climate

The territory of the former prefecture-level city of Laiwu includes a basin that is elliptically aligned north-south. It is surrounded by hills to the north, east and south, with a plain to the west of Laiwu. The highest point of the area is 994 meters above sea level, the lowest point at 148 meters. The main rivers are the Wen He and the Yingwen He . The annual average temperature of Laiwu is between 11 and 13 ° C, the average annual rainfall is 761 millimeters and there are 204 frost-free days per year.

Administrative structure

The prefecture -level city of Laiwu was composed of two boroughs at the county level at the time of its dissolution . These were named Laicheng and Gangcheng .

On December 26, 2018, the State Council approved the Shandong Provincial Government's proposal to dissolve the prefecture-level city of Laiwu and integrate it into Jinan City . This decision was made in 2019, bringing both Laicheng and Gangcheng districts under the administration of Jinan. Laicheng was renamed Laiwu District as part of this reorganization .
