Qamdo ( Chamdo , Tibetan : ཆབ་ མདོ་ ས་ཁུལ་ , Wylie transcription : chab mdo ) is a district-free city in the east of the Tibet Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China . It emerged from the former Qamdo administrative district on July 11, 2014, as the third district-free city in Tibet. The administrative area has an area of 110,154 km² and approx. 570,000 inhabitants (2002). The city's seat of government is Chengguan Township in the Karub District.
