Zhag'yab (Drag'yab; Tib. For "ledge") is a district of the city of Qamdo in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . The name refers to the meditation site of the first patron of the area, I. Dagyab Kyabgön , a cave under a ledge.
The district is located in the far east of Tibet on the upper reaches of the Mekong , about 60 km south of the government seat of Qamdo. It has an area of 8,250.61 km² and a population of 53,628 (2004). In the census in 2000 it was 53,009. The administrative seat is the large community Yêndum ( dbyen 'dum དབྱེན་ འདུམ་ / Yānduō Zhèn 烟 多 镇 ) with 9,314 inhabitants (2000 census). In the far west of the district, the runways of Bamda Airport protrude from Baxoi to Zhag'yab.
The landscape is characterized by fertile river oases with rural settlements resembling military villages, as well as striking, deep red, barren rocky landscapes with vertical geological layers and wide, green high pastures.
The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture or as nomads. There is no modern infrastructure. The horse serves as a means of travel and transport in the impassable area, the plains and valleys of which are between 3,100 and 4,200 meters high.
