Location of the district of Riwoqê (pink) in Qamdo

The circle Riwoqe (Riboche) belongs to the administrative area of the city Qamdo in eastern Tibet Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China . In 1999 it had 39,683 inhabitants.

history

The place name Riwoqê, "Big Mountain", goes back to the monastery of the same name belonging to the Taglung Kagyü School, which was founded there by Sangye Ön (Tib .: sangs rgyas dbon) (1250–1296) with the support of Chögyel Phagpas and was founded into the 20th century Century held the secular and religious fortunes of the region unchallenged.
