Haidong
Haidong ( Chinese 海東市 / 海东市 , pinyin Hǎidōng Shì , formerly Sino 海东地区 ) is in the eastern Chinese province of Qinghai lying prefecture-level city . The city government is based in the Ledu district . Haidong has an area of 13,161 km² and about 1.48 million inhabitants (2004). The city is bordered to the north by the Tibetan Haibei Autonomous District , to the east and south by the Gansu Province , to the southwest by the Huangnan Autonomous District of the Tibetans, and to the west by the Hainan Autonomous District of the Tibetans and the prefecture-level city of Xining .
Tendzin Gyatsho , the XIV Dalai Lama, was born in 1935 in Hongya Village of the " Shihuiyao Community of Hui Nationality" (Ping'an County) .
Administrative structure
Haidong is made up of two boroughs and four autonomous counties . These are:
- Ledu district (乐 都 区), 2,821 km², approx. 290,000 inhabitants (2004);
- District of Ping'an (平安 区), main town: Large municipality of Ping'an (平安 镇), 750 km², approx. 110,000 inhabitants (2004);
- Autonomous County Minhe Hui and Tu (民和 回族 土族 自治县), capital: Chuankou Municipality (川口 镇), 1,780 km², approx. 370,000 inhabitants (2004);
- Huzhu der Tu Autonomous District (互助 土族 自治县), capital: Weiyuan Municipality (威远 镇), 3,321 km², approx. 370,000 inhabitants (2004);
- Hualong Autonomous County of Hui (化 隆 回族 自治县), capital: Bayan Municipality (巴 燕 镇), 2,740 km², approx. 230,000 inhabitants (2004);
- Xunhua Autonomous County der Salar (循化 撒拉族 自治县), capital: Jishi municipality (积 石 镇), 1,749 km², approx. 110,000 inhabitants (2004).
