Season overview: Pacific typhoon season 2005 |
The typhoon Talim ( Chinese 泰利 , Pinyin Taili ) moved on 1 September 2005 on Taiwan and China away. By then, Talim was the strongest typhoon of 2005 to hit mainland China.
In the early morning of September 1, 2005, typhoon hit Taiwan, where the storm killed three people and injured another 59 people. The entire area of the island of Taiwan was hit by the storm. The towns of Yilan and Hualien were most exposed to the typhoon. At times 1.4 million households had no electricity and 620,000 households no longer had a water supply; there were also landslides and floods . The cyclone had wind speeds of up to 240 km / h.
When it hit the Chinese mainland 6 hours later, the storm only had a wind speed of 115 km / h and was therefore downgraded to a severe tropical storm . Zhejiang Province was nevertheless badly hit and over 10,000 houses were destroyed in this province alone. The city of Wencheng was hit by floods. In China, 102 people died as a result of the storm. According to estimates by the government of the People's Republic of China, the damage amounts to around 1.2 billion euros.
Talim was followed by Typhoon Nabi , which caused major damage in Japan .
