Way of typhoon

The typhoon Nabi ( Jap.ナービーNabi , the Korean word for butterfly ) was the 14th typhoon of 2005 and followed shortly after Typhoon Talim . He met on September 6, 2005 on the Japanese island of Kyushu and on September 8th on Hokkaidō .

On the Saffir-Simpson five-level hurricane wind scale , it was initially classified as a Category 5 typhoon at sea and later as a Level 4 storm as it approached land. That is why it is also known as the “super typhoon”.

Storm course

On August 29, 2005, a tropical cyclone formed near the Mariana Island of Saipan , which turned into a typhoon by August 30. It passed Guam and Saipan on August 31st, wind speeds of 120 km / h were measured on Saipan and a rainfall of about 57 mm on Guam .

After the storm passed the Mariana Islands , it was rated Level 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale on September 1 . When he reached the Philippines on September 3, he was initially given the name Jolina .

On September 6, Nabi hit the Japanese island of Kyushu with wind speeds of 185 km / h . On September 7th, it subsided at sea and was downgraded to a tropical storm. The effects could be felt as far as Korea .

On September 8, the storm reached the Japanese island of Hokkaidō with wind speeds of 90 km / h and after crossing the island it subsided to a low pressure area .

Japan

In Japan, Nabi caused 21 deaths, 140 people were injured (around 30 seriously) and seven people are missing. The first fatality was a 72-year-old man who drowned in Tokyo trying to rescue his trapped vehicle.

115,000 people had previously been evacuated from the affected area , 40,000 people sought protection in emergency shelters. Around 270,000 households were temporarily without electricity, including the Japanese capital Tokyo . 700 flights , rail and ferry connections were canceled. Several factories were closed. The Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichirō canceled his campaign appearances in order to take care of the crisis management.

700 schools were closed in Hokkaidō and electricity went out in around 1,700 households.

Nabi destroyed around 1,000 houses and flooded 11,400 more.
