Taiping ( "City of Eternal Peace" , formerly: Larut ) is one of the oldest cities in the Southeast Asian state of Malaysia . The former capital of the region currently has around 220,589 inhabitants and is located in the state of Perak , in the northwest of the Malay Peninsula .

In the late fifties in the 18th century, tin mining began here by immigrant Chinese workers. They dug the metal from several tin mines around the Sungai Larut River and turned the city into a boomtown , where secret societies ( triads ) fought bloodily for power in the Larut Wars . After British pressure on those involved, the Pangkor Treaty was signed on the island of Pangkor in 1874 . After the peace, it was decided to rename the city , which was split into two hostile camps, the "City of Eternal Peace" (Taiping).

The population consists of Chinese, Malays and Indians.
