The Perak ( Malay Sungai Perak - Silver River ) is a river in northern Malaysia .
geography
It is the second largest on the Malay Peninsula . With a catchment area of 14,900 km², it covers around 70% of the state of Perak . It has its source on the border between Perak, Kelantan and Thailand in the Belum Forest Reserve . In its upper reaches it mainly flows through forest areas. The agricultural areas that flow through consist mainly of oil palms and rubber plantings . It flows in a southerly direction and joins the Strait of Malacca after about 400 km at Bagan Datoh . Its main tributaries are the Sungai Pelus , Sungai Kinta , Sungai Bantang Padang, and Sungai Bidor.
Energy generation
There are several reservoirs in its upper reaches. The first and largest is the Temenggor Lake which is named after one of its tributaries, the Sungai Temenggor . This is followed by: Lake Bersia, Lake Kenering and Lake Chendroh, the latter dams about half of the catchment area of the Perak. The lakes are mainly used to generate electricity.
traffic
The Perak is the state's main waterway.
Hydrology
In the winter months, during the rainy season, there are frequent floods.
