Teluk Intan

Teluk Intan is a city in the state of Perak in Malaysia .

history

The first inhabitants belonged to the kingdom of Malacca. As refugees before the Portuguese conquest in 1511, they settled on the Perak on the site of today's city.

Under the name "Teluk Mak Intan", the city had been a court place from 1528 until this function was transferred to Kuala Kangsar in 1877 . This name goes back to a local trader who came from the Mandailing tribe in northern Sumatra .

Under the British protectorate, the name "Teluk Anson (Anson Bay)" was used after the lieutenant governor of Penang, Edward Anson , who made the town planning in 1882. In 1982 the Sultan of Perak changed the name to "Teluk Intan (Diamond Bay)".

economy

At the end of the 20th century, the city experienced an economic decline. This was caused by the fact that the port lost its importance because shallows had formed as a result of erosion. Because of the economic decline, a railway line was also shut down.

With the construction of a new street and the construction of a new city center, the city has experienced an upswing in recent years. The main economic factor are palm oil plantations. a. operated by Sime Darby .

education

In the city there is a sub-campus of the MARA Technical University and an institute of the National University of Malaysia .
