history

According to documents, Palech emerged as a village in the 15th century at the latest and held this status until the 20th century. The place name has its origins in Finno-Ugric languages , which suggests that the area around the area was settled well before the 12th century. In the 15th century the village belonged to a son of Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) , towards the end of the century a (wooden) church was built there for the first time, a predecessor of today's Church of the Exaltation of the Cross.

The origin of the Palech icon painting art is presumed from the 16th century, when Palech became a craftsmen, in which among other things wood carvers were active. At the beginning of the 18th century, an independent style of icon painters was established here, which, among other things, was based on the traditions of the old Suzdal state .

After the October Revolution of 1917, icon painting in Palech fell sharply in connection with the state anti-religious campaign of the communists and almost ceased to exist for a time. In 1924 in an Artel of artists, relying on wood paintings and to paint miniatures (see: lacquer miniatures from Palekh ) specialized. This handicraft (so-called Palech miniature) has survived in Palech to this day, and the old icon-painting traditions have been revived since the end of the Soviet Union.

In 1947, Palekh received urban-type settlement status.
