Staraya Witschuga ( Russian Ста́рая Ви́чуга ) is an urban-type settlement in the Ivanovo Oblast in Russia with 5325 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is a good 60 km as the crow flies northeast of the Ivanovo Oblast Administrative Center on the Witschuschanka, which flows a little north of the left into the right Volga tributary Sunscha .
Staraya Witschuga belongs to the Witschugski Rajon , is located about six kilometers northwest of its administrative center Witschuga and is the seat and only locality of the municipality of Starowitschugskoje gorodskoje posselenije.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1504 as the village of Witschjuga in the will of the Moscow Grand Duke Ivan Vasilyevich . The name is of Finno-Ugric origin. In the late 18th century, Count and Lieutenant General Sergei Tatishchev had a palace ensemble built there that is still relatively well preserved today. During this period and throughout the entire 19th century, companies in the textile industry settled in, as in the entire surrounding region.
In 1871 the Ivanovo - Kineshma railway line passed a few kilometers to the southeast. The textile companies and associated workers' settlements that sprang up in the vicinity of the Witschuga railway station soon outstripped the old village economically and in terms of population. In summary, they were initially referred to as Nowaja Witschuga ("New Witschuga") and in 1925 they received city rights as Witschuga . As a result, the original village was named Staraya Witschuga ("Old Witschuga"). In 1938 it became an urban-type settlement itself.
