Gavrilow Possad ( Russian Гаврилов Посад ) is a small town in Ivanovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 6434 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located at the eastern end of a foothill of the Moscow ridge about 85 km southwest of the Oblast capital Ivanovo at the mouth of the river Woimiga in the Irmes in the river system of the Volga .
Gavrilow Posad is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1434 as the village of Gavrilowskoje . It is possible that the village was founded at the beginning of the 13th century and named "Big Nest" by the Vladimir Grand Duke Vsevolod after the baptismal name of his son Svyatoslav , Gavriil .
In 1609 the village belonged to the Russian Tsar's court as Gawrilowa sloboda .
In 1789 the town charter was granted under the name Gawrilowski Possad ; the current form of the name only became common at the beginning of the 20th century. Still an important regional trading point in the 19th century, the city's development stagnated compared to other cities in the area.

The city has a local museum.
Economy and Infrastructure
Gavrilow Posad is the center of an agricultural area. There are smaller companies in the food and textile industries.
Not far there is a stud on which the Wladimir draft horse breed (Russian Wladimirski Tjaschelowos ) is bred (see city arms).
The city lies on the railway line ( Moscow -) Belkowo –Iwanowo (km 238 from Moscow), which opened on this section in 1899 .
