Shuja ( Russian Шуя ) is a Russian city with 58,486 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Ivanovo Oblast . It is located around 300 km northeast of Moscow and 32 km southeast of the regional capital, Ivanovo, on the Tesa , a tributary of the Kljasma . The nearest town is Kochma , 20 km northwest of Shuja.

Economy, history

The city, known since the 14th century, was originally a trading center. In the 19th century, flax processing established itself here, as in other cities in the region . The trade and processing of sheepskins was also an important economic factor at the time. In 1877, more than 30 villages with around 5000 people in Shuja County were processing raw sheepskins into sheep clothing. In total, this was about 600,000 furs and 60,000 pairs of gloves worth 2,300,000 rubles.

Today Shuja has a number of industries including cotton processing and synthetic fiber factories, breweries, particle board production and others. Several educational institutions are also based here.

Attractions

The city and its surroundings are a treasure trove of various architectural styles with several magnificent palaces and former noble residences. Here there is, among other things, the palace that Elisabeth of Russia lived in in 1729. Also worth seeing is the highest free-standing bell tower in the world at 106 meters, built in 1832, which belongs to the Resurrection Cathedral (1798).
