Putschesch ( Russian Пучеж ) is a small town in the Ivanovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 8,588 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 175 km east of the oblast capital Ivanovo on the right bank of the Volga, which is dammed up here to form the Gorkier reservoir .
Putschesch is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1594 as the village Putschishche . In the 17th century it was known for its handicrafts, dyed linen fabrics ( krasheniny ) and axes.
In 1793 the place was given the status of a posad under its current name and thus in fact the town charter . In the 19th century it developed into an important grain and linen trading center. The city was an important recruitment center for Treidler (Burlaki) gathered in a population of 1000 here at the beginning of navigation period in the spring up to 6000 Treidler.
During the flooding of the Gorkier Reservoir in the 1950s, most of the old city was flooded and new districts were built on higher ground.

Culture and sights
The city has a local museum.
The Trinity Church ( Троицкая церковь / Troizkaja zerkow) from 1787 is located in the village of Vorontsovo in the Putschesh district, eight kilometers away, and the Prophet Elias Church ( Ильинская церковк67 ) from 1787 in Ilya- Vysokovo , 25 kilometers away .
Economy and Infrastructure
In Putschesch there are companies in the textile industry and the construction industry.
The city lies on the road R81 Kineschma - Yuryevets -Putschesch-Purech (at Zavolzhye ).
