history

When the Upper Mölltal was originally settled cannot be precisely determined. Today's Upper Carinthia and East Tyrol were founded around 1200 BC. Settled by the Illyrians , from around 400 BC. Celts immigrated from the north and founded around 200 BC. The kingdom of Noricum . The names "Tauern" for the mountain range and "Möll" for the river in the longest of all Tauern valleys originate from this time. During the time of the Roman rule, who incorporated the Noricum into their empire around 50 AD, a traffic route leading to Salzburg was created via the Tauernkamm and Heiligenblut .

With the migration of peoples in the 5th and 6th centuries, the state order in the Noricum and with it probably a large part of the settlements in the Upper Mölltal perished. At the end of the 6th century Slavs began to settle, which was reflected in a number of landscape and place names ending in -itz, -ach, -ig or -nig. From 740 Christian missionaries from Bavaria came to Carinthia, clergymen from Freising founded the parish Stall in the 8th century, from which further parishes were formed in the region over time. Numerous Bavarian settlers moved in from the 10th century and created additional settlement areas in the Mölltal through clearing.

When exactly the parish of Stall came into being is not documented; in 957 a church in Stall was mentioned in a document. Originally belonging to the Diocese of Freising, it came to the Counts of Lurn as a fief or by exchange and after their extinction, the parish was transferred to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1149 , which was not to change until 1803. A ministerial family built a castle or a permanent tower in or near the village in the 12th or 13th century. Stall was the seat of a land registry office until 1848 and the seat of a court first mentioned in 1318 ( castle keep ).

According to legend, the name stall is interpreted to mean that after a landslide from the former village of Wildegg only a stall was left, and in fact the area was often affected by violent storms and mudslides . However, places with “stable” in their name very often go back to a high medieval “curtis stabularia” , which is to be interpreted as a manorial manor in the sense of an official court and in this case also applies.

With the formation of local congregations in 1850, the municipality of Stall was also constituted, and since then nothing has changed in the area of the municipality, apart from minor border corrections.

Population development

Already from 1981 to 1991 the municipality of Stall had a negative migration balance (−109), but this was offset by a strongly positive birth balance (+155). In the following decades the birth balance remained positive, but fell to +127 and +38. During the same period, emigration increased, so that the number of inhabitants decreased significantly.

coat of arms

In the coat of arms of Stall, the figure color gold is intended to remind of the gold mining practiced in Mölltal for over three centuries. The stable indicates, although etymologically incorrect, the place and municipality name, the ear of wheat underneath, as well as the green shield, indicates the agriculture carried out in the municipality, whereby each of the 15 grains of the ear stands for one of the localities.

The official blazon reads: "In a green shield over a golden ear with fifteen grains a golden Mölltaler stable."

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on May 20, 1977, the flag shows the colors green and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
