His work began with an idealistic-nationalistic phase and later took on universalistic-idealistic and culturally critical traits.

Life

Johann Kleinfercher was born in the hamlet of Untere Steinwand as the son of a maid and a poor farmer and worked as a cattle herder at a young age. The local priest, who noticed the intelligent boy, took care of his enrollment in the grammar school in Klagenfurt . His first poem was printed there in 1845. In 1848 he was a co-founder of the Pennal fraternity Carantania , later Teurnia Klagenfurt and its first president .

In 1850 he began to study literature in Vienna. Since 1857 he worked with the magazine Die Lyra . He also belonged to the Iduna circle , which named itself after the Nordic deity of fertility, as did Auguste Hyrtl . In the literary circle he was the senior president. In 1862 Fercher came to Perchtoldsdorf , where he constantly spent the summer time up to 1879.

Fercher was close friends with the anatomist Josef Hyrtl .
