Oswaldiberg between Villach and Treffen

Großvassach , also called Vassach , is a district of Villach and is located in the north of the city.

The villages of Großvassach, Kleinvassach, Gritschach, Essach, Zwischenbergen and Blas belong to Vassach. In Kleinvassach there is the Vassacher See , which is an important recreational area.

Vassach did not come to Villach until 1974 when the Landskron community was incorporated. The Vassacher Kirchtag in August at the two inns Bacher and Gasser with the well-known "Kirchtagsstandln" is also known.

The Vassach Volunteer Fire Brigade has existed since 1883 . It celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2003. On the occasion of this, the fire station was renovated and a new TLF 1300 tank tender was handed over. At the beginning of 2009, the second vehicle of the Vassach fire brigade, a small fire engine , was exchanged for a new one, which, after installing a hydraulic rescue kit, extends the range of applications in the area of traffic accidents.

There has been an elementary school in Vassach since 1900 . In 1990 it was renovated and an extension was added. The school has five classes and a playground.

Church on Oswaldiberg

The Vassach church is in the middle of the village and is dedicated to St. Margaret and was first mentioned on May 25, 1488. In contrast to the church on Oswaldiberg, it was only an insignificant branch church. It was not until the early 20th century that the church was renovated and made a little more significant, as mass could now be held twice a month. In 1923 the church was renovated. In 1931 the bells were inaugurated. The bells were destroyed in World War II. In 1950 the new bells were inaugurated. In 1990 the church was renovated again. In 2009 the roof and other parts were renewed.

A procession is held every July in honor of St. Margaret.

There is another church on Oswaldiberg , which is a well-known excursion destination. The small church has a walk-in bell tower. Church services only take place on special occasions (Easter, Pentecost, Vassach Church Day).
