Ludwig Loewe
Ludwig Loewe , born Louis Levy (born November 27, 1837 in Heiligenstadt ; died September 11, 1886 in Berlin ) was a German-Jewish entrepreneur and member of the Reichstag .
Life
Born as Louis Levy, he used Ludwig Loewe as his German name at an early stage. In 1858 he opened a wool goods commission shop in Berlin. Approx. In 1861 he changed his subject and founded the General Agency for Machines Ludwig Loewe & Co. , which initially dealt with machines and later also the production of sewing machines . In 1869/1870 the transformation into Ludwig Loewe & Co. KG a. A. for the manufacture of sewing machines , which in the 1870s expanded its production range to include weapons ( gun parts , ammunition ) and machine tools , initiated by corresponding orders. In 1872 the company received an order to manufacture special rifles for the Prussian Army . As early as 1870, Ludwig Loewe traveled to the USA to study the new developments there and then introduced the new tools and production methods he had come to know in America to his plants, especially for mass production . In 1875 Ludwig Loewe took his brother Isidor Loewe into the company as authorized signatory . In 1878 he became a partner and after Ludwig Loewe's death in 1886 the sole director of the company.
Ludwig Loewe was politically active for left-wing liberal parties at various levels. From 1865 he was a member of the Berlin city council and was particularly involved in the field of education . In 1877 he became a member of the Prussian House of Representatives , where he represented the Progressive Party until 1884 , and then the German Free-spirited Party until his death . In 1878 he was also elected to the German Reichstag for the constituency of Berlin I.
Ludwig Loewe was a member of the assembly of representatives of the Berlin Jewish community . He was also a member of the committee for the cultural promotion of Eastern Jews and from 1876 in the Society of Friends .
His grave and that of his wife are in the Jewish cemetery on Schönhauser Allee .
