Population development

Picturesque Lesach Valley

The Hermagor district currently has 18,174 inhabitants (as of 2018). That is a decrease of over 2,000 inhabitants since 1991. In the Lesachtal, the western part of the district, the population decline is greatest. Here the population has decreased by more than 12% in the last 14 years. This trend is expected to continue as the birth rate falls and many young people leave for work.

While the average income is well below the average compared to Austria and Carinthia, the unemployment rate remains very low. The Hermagor district has the lowest unemployment rate in all of Carinthia. Long-term unemployment in particular is almost zero, while youth unemployment is falling only slightly, contrary to the national trend:

economy

The economy of the Hermagor district has a strong service sector , which is mainly determined by tourism . The Nassfeld is the largest ski area in Carinthia in the district. The Carnic High Trail is one of the most famous alpine hiking trails . The Gailtaler Speckfest, which takes place annually on a weekend in June, provides a strong impetus in summer.

Another focus is wood finishing. Based on the abundance of wood, first sawmills were formed , then wood chip systems and district heating networks .

Economic structure

Simmental cattle in the Lesachtal

The proportion of the population in agriculture and forestry in Hermagor is 0.3%, below the Carinthian average of 0.9% (values from 2017). The production sector and service sector as a whole largely correspond to the Carinthian average. The breakdown of the services shows the strength of tourism with the high proportion in the area of "accommodation and catering":

Agriculture and Forestry

The minor importance of agriculture can also be seen in the cattle population : only 9,836 of the 188,330 cattle in Carinthia live in the Hermagor district. That is just under 5% of the Carinthian cattle population with an 8.5% share of the area.

As in all Carinthian districts, forestry is an important factor, especially the sale of softwood . In 2017, 233,000 cubic meters of wood were sold, 92% of which was softwood.

Industry / manufacturing, manufacturing of goods

The top 5 industrial companies in the Hermagor district are (as of 2017):

Other companies in the district mainly deal with the processing of wood.

Most of the businesses are located in the city of Hermagor and the two market communities of Kötschach-Mauthen and Kirchbach:

tourism

Tourism is the most important industry in the district. While tourism accounts for around 7% of economic output in the federal state of Carinthia, it is over 17% in the Hermagor district.

While summer tourism dominates in Carinthia overall, overnight stays in the Hermagor district are comparatively high in the winter half-year. This is mainly due to the Nassfeld ski area , which is also reflected in the regional distribution of overnight stays across the individual communities.

The development of overnight stays is above the average for Carinthia, but has a slump in 2017:
