history

The first documentary mention of a Gitschtal village is that of Weißbriach from 1331.

From the 16th century on, precious metals and later iron ore were mined in the Gitschtal. In Gösseringgraben there were hammer mills , which were bought by Baron Kranz in the middle of the 17th century and which ensured a steep economic rise until their closure in the 19th century.

Tourism in the Gitschtal began in the second half of the 19th century, after the First World War the Kneipp spa was built.

The present-day local community of Gitschtal was initially constituted in 1850 as the community of Weißbriach. In the course of the municipal structural reform, the two previously independent municipalities Weißbriach and St. Lorenzen im Gitschtal were merged into the municipality of Gitschtal in 1973.
