The parish church of Sankt Lorenzen im Gitschtal is elevated on a limestone rock in the north of the village.

history

In 1756 a mission station was founded in Sankt Lorenzen . In 1770 a mission house was built, which stood next to the church as a parsonage until 1959 .

Between 1866 and 1869, the church was largely rebuilt according to plans by Johann Waldner.

Building

The church consists of a Gothic choir from the 15th to 16th centuries and a transept built between 1866 and 1869 and the three-bay nave in neo-Gothic style. The two-bay choir with a 3/8 end has two-part pointed arched windows with renewed tracery and three-edged, single-braced buttresses . On the south side of the church, a picture of St. Christopher from 1665 is hidden by the sacristy . The massive tower with wall slots has ogival sound windows and is crowned with an eight-sided pointed gable helmet.

A ribbed vault extends over the choir . On the north side there is a tabernacle with a Gothic diamond lattice. The retracted, pointed triumphal arch closes the choir.

The neo-Gothic high altar shows St. Laurentius in the middle picture and the apostles Peter and Paul in the side pictures. Our Lady of Sorrows can be seen on the left side altar and a crucifixion image on the right. The polychrome reliefs of the pulpit represent the four evangelists and Jesus.

The altarpieces, the Stations of the Cross and the reliefs on the pulpit were created by Adam Brandstätter from Kötschach in the Nazarene style from 1868 to 1879. The organ from 1856 comes from Josef Grafenauer from Egg, the bell marked 1755 from Josef Grassmayr .
