The Catholic parish church in the west of Weißbriach is consecrated to John the Baptist .

history

The late Gothic church was first mentioned in 1331 in a land register by Hermagor . About the consecration of two altars on October 26th 1485 was reported by Paolo Santonino . In 1751 Weißbriach became a vicariate permanently manned by a priest. In 1751, Weißbriach and the Weißensee area were separated from the Hermagor parish by the Görz Bishop Karl Michael and raised to their own parish. The church was restored in 1963, with a further exterior restoration in 1992, the architectural polychromy from the 16th century was partially exposed.

Exterior view

The one-bay choir with a 3/8 end is slightly lower than the nave and shifted south of the axis. The three-storey church tower has two pointed arch and two biforallic windows and is crowned with a pyramid helmet. The oldest bell is from the 15th or 16th century. There is a baroque sacristy extension between the choir and the tower. The renewed west portal is covered by a pillar porch. The church building has lancet windows in the nave and in the choir , whereby the original tracery noses are still visible from the outside in the end windows .

Interior

In the three-bay nave, a star-rib vault extends over fluted wall pillars with round templates and capital rings. In the west yoke, however, ribs and wall pillars are missing. The wooden organ loft is from the Baroque era; the organ was created around 1700. In the eastern nave yoke there is a low arch-shaped wall niche on the south side. A rounded, grooved triumphal arch separates the nave from the choir. A star rib vault extends over consoles in the choir. The sacristy portal with a pointed arch stands on the north side in the front yoke, next to it is a sacrament house with an original grid.

Murals

The painting in the northern lunette of the choir wall above the sacristy portal shows the baptism of Christ and dates from 1616. The painting was created around 1620 with an ornamental frame above the sacrament niche. It shows a cross with angels presenting the instruments of Christ's passion. The resurrection shows the painting marked 1622 on the northern slope of the choir. On the southern lunette of the choir wall, the fresco shows Herod's feast with Salome, to whom the head of John is brought. Above it is the crucifixion with donor figures. The angels and stars in the vaulted fields were created around 1600.
