St. Peter (also: St. Peter-Welzenegg , Slovene Šentpeter pri Celovcu ) is the 10th district of the Carinthian state capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee .

geography

West view of Harbach Castle ( Markus Pernhart around 1850)

St. Peter is located east of downtown Klagenfurt. In the south the district borders along Ebenthaler Straße on the district of St. Ruprecht , in the west the border runs along the line Ebenthaler Straße - Reichenberger Straße - Völkermarkter Straße - River Glan to the Völkermarkter Vorstadt , in the north along Dammgasse - Karl-Friedrich- Gauß-Straße, crosses the airfield of Klagenfurt Airport and continues along Drasendorfer Straße and surrounds the village of Witternitz. In the east the border runs straight through the airfield, then along the old city limits and St. Jakober-Straße and then borders the market town of Ebenthal in Carinthia .

In addition to the IX. In the Annabichl district, the Glan also flows through St. Peter. It "enters" the district in the northwest, traverses it in a south-easterly direction and leaves it at the municipality border with Ebenthal in Carinthia . In earlier centuries several mills lined the river bank. Not a single one has survived. A lithograph with the motif of such a mill not far from Welzenegg Castle illustrates the river landscape and its infrastructure at that time.

Spirit and yeast factory in Limmersach

Manor house (Fischlstrasse 34)

In 1891 the large industrialist Siegmund Fischl acquired the alcohol and yeast factory in Limmersach, which was closed at the time, and which many years later became the property of Mautner-Markhof .

The factory is located on the eastern edge of the settlement named after Fischl and after its closure at the end of the 20th century it is only an industrial ruin. The focal point of the property is the stately multi-storey mansion . Today this is partly used as a municipal kindergarten and after-school care center. To the south of this is the Fischl Park with old trees, walking paths and a large duck pond.

Administrative division

St. Peter is divided into two cadastral communities and the following localities.

  • St. Peter near Ebenthal :

Buildings

Economy and Infrastructure

After the St. Martin district, St. Peter is the Klagenfurt district with the second highest population. Large housing estates such as the Fischl settlement emerged here.

The district is home to the state fire brigade command and the state fire brigade school of the state of Carinthia, the road construction office, the cinema center Cinecity and the Klagenfurt-Ebenthal train station. Large shopping centers and wholesale markets were built on Völkermarkter Strasse and along the Südring.

Slovenian / bilingual education

One of the city's Slovenian cultural centers: the Mladinski dom

Some of the central Slovene educational institutions of the city of Klagenfurt are located in Sankt Peter, especially since it has always been the political and cultural center as well as the place of residence of Carinthian Slovenes. These educational institutions, which were set up on the basis of the constitutionally granted rights, increasingly serve as intercultural meeting places for all citizens of the country.

These include the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium for Slovenes ( Zvezna gimnazija in Zvezna realna gimnazija za Slovence ), the bilingual Federal Trade Academy located in the same building complex, the public bilingual elementary school 24 (Javna dvojezična ljudinski), as well as the Sonce im. Dom . The Slovenian Carinthian Music School ( Glasbena šola na Koroškem ) is also located at Mikschallee 4 .

These educational institutions use modern pedagogical approaches to provide the children of the community with the basis for personal development and increasing their future prospects in a common Europe.

In St. Peter the seat of the well-stocked Slovenian public depositary library is the Slovenian Study Library in Mladinski dom , at 4 Mikschallee.
